SSPS Education InfoShare
#2007-02
In the first InfoShare (#2007-01) published a few months ago I briefly introduced the new USPS University concept. In this issue I would like to focus on the USPS Seminar Series. This series of short 2-hour seminars targets a wide range of boaters and types of boating. They are designed to be presented in one session thereby requiring less time commitment than the traditional USPS courses which run anywhere from 4-10 weeks in length (although they certainly do not replace the complete and detailed subject matter presented in the full USPS courses). There is no exam and each seminar is presented using a Power Point format including great graphics and text. Most include high value take-away guides along with the latest information for instructors and attendees. Each seminar provides credits toward the soon to be released Boating Operator Certification (BOC) program.
The first six of these seminars are available now.
• Using VHF & VHF/DSC Marine Radio
• Using GPS
• How to Use a Chart
• Onboard Weather Forecasting
• Boat Handling under Power
• Sail Trim and Rig Tuning
Several more seminars are nearing completion and will be available soon: Knots for Mariners, Onboard Emergencies, Using Digital Charts, and Heavy Weather Sailing.
In August twenty (20) squadron members and guests attended the GPS seminar and we will be presenting the VHF Marine Radio Seminar in December. Check the squadron web page @ www.ssps-pa.org for details. Our plan is to offer a new seminar every couple of months as well as repeat offerings periodically as needed. As these seminars can be presented to both USPS members as well as the general boating public they offer a great opportunity for recruitment of new members to the squadron. We will investigate doing seminars at local marine and sporting retail stores, at the boat show and/or City Island, Goldsboro or other marina/club locations. This could and will present opportunities for many of our squadron members to become involved by assisting the SSPS Education Department with these seminar presentations so don’t hold back any ideas you might have.
Bottom line: join the Education “TEAM (Together Everyone Achieves More)” and come out and enjoy the USPS Seminar Series.
ENJOY AND SAFE BOATING
