U.S. Power Squadron History |
The U.S. Power Squadron first formed in 1911 in Boston, Massachusetts by Roger Upton. The club was first recognized and officially became the Power Squadron club within the Boston Yacht Club in 1913. The second group formed within the Portland [Maine] Yacht Club, followed quickly by others from Maine to Maryland. In 1914 the United States Power Squadrons were launched in Maryland.
The USPS Ensign was designed by Secretary Charles Chapman of New York City in 1914. Internal education courses began in 1915. The squadrons protected the US coastline during WWI and WWII. USPS instructors taught Navy and Coast Guard Auxiliary Units during WWII developing a cooperative spirit that exists today.
Membership grew from that first squadron to over 450 local squadrons. There were 5000 members by 1939; 12,000 members in 16 Districts by the end of 1945. The USPS helped to establish the Canadian Power Squadrons. The organization continues its proud tradition of public service, safe boating and education. Membership is open to power boaters, sailboaters, PWC owners and even non-boat owners. Click on the link below to obtain more information.
